Plane & Grain – Knockdown furnitureStory
4th Year || Final project || Prof. Sefi Hefetz

A material dialogue

The identity of the collection rests on a deliberate dialogue between two materials, kept visible rather than resolved away.
Every piece is made from just 5mm aluminum and solid oak.

The PlaneAluminum

Sanded aluminum sheet, waxed for a natural finish in a muted, desaturated slate blue-gray. Sharp architectural lines, geometric rigidity, thin profiles.

The GrainOak

Rich, warm oak. Organic permanence, texture, and the structural mass that grounds each piece.

Precision mechanical joinery

Toolless assembly

Aluminum panels slip directly through precision-milled slots in the oak. No tools required.

No adhesives

Structural rigidity comes purely from geometry, friction, and gravity: no screws, fasteners, or wood glue.

Honest construction

Metal tabs stay visible where they punctuate the wood, turning the logic of the joint into a decorative, functional feature.

Flat-pack & circular

Flat

Ships fully knocked-down, maximizing shipping volume and minimizing transport emissions.

Clean

No permanent glue or fused materials. Aluminum and oak separate cleanly for recycling or repurposing.

Surface

Both materials are sanded to a low grit and finished with wax, so the aluminum ages and matures naturally alongside the oak.

Ombrina

mentored by
Ron Gilad

A bedside lamp inspired by paper lanterns, designed as both an ambient and a reading light.

An adjustable mechanical dimmer lets users tailor the light to their needs, from ambient glow to reading.

MWT

Modular
Woodturning
Tool

A system designed to fit a wide range of existing chisels.

Custom inserts fit an SDS mechanism, securely hold each chisel, and allow quick, easy swapping between tools.

Throughout the development process, I focused on identifying a unique innovation for woodturning handles with the Japanese saw and the harpoon in mind.

After iterating on various geometries, textures, and ergonomic ‘rhythms,’ I developed a rounded hexagonal profile with a slight offset angle at the end.

Restless

mentored by
Itay Noy

Designed as a recovery-management tool, this watch tracks daily activity to help prevent overexertion following a knee injury.

It marks a technical milestone for Bezalel as the first project to successfully implement CNC milling and turning of Grade 5 titanium.

Engineered to 0.01mm tolerances, featuring a modified Miyota 9100, custom cut and laser etched glass and a 0.2mm heat-patinated dial

Time is presented with minutes in the center and the 24-hour display in the “seconds” position, to further distance time perception from reality.

The result is an automatic watch that visualizes physical activity through its power reserve indicator, serving as a unique productivity tool.

Skipping
Grasshopper

Woodturning

Inspired by rock skipping in northern Italy and wanting to challenge my craft-ability, I used randomized Sinc functions in Grasshopper to generate ripple patterns and laser-cut tool profiles for precision woodturning.

simply a tool

mentored by
Nitsan Debbi

Head of Bezalel’s Industrial Design department and senior designer at Naoto Fukasawa

A course that uses “simple” design thinking and rapid development to create multiple tools, then a whole system out of one of them.

The year I took part, the focus was cutlery, and I was ranked best in class.

3rd Year || “simply a tool” || Nitsan Debbi

Driven by the ‘finger method’ for measuring soup thickness and the lollipop “icon,” this series uses a revolved cut to define its functional identity. This geometry creates a tactile, shallow bowl for the spoon and a sharp edge for the fork and knife, resulting in a durable, CNC-machined maple set and stainless steel spoon.

3rd Year || “simply a tool” || Nitsan Debbi

Responding to a measuring spoon brief, I utilized brass for its antibacterial properties to create a specialized tool for health supplement and pill dosages.

The final outcome features two distinct sizes: a compact version for a single dosage, shown here with an Advil, and an elongated model tailored for a double measurement, scaled to standard supplement dimensions.

A bite inspired by Chef Giuseppe Gasperoni
Based on a brief interview and further research, we were tasked with creating a spoon for Milan Design Week that reflects Chef Gasperoni’s unique philosophy, combining tradition with contemporary innovation.

Charred maple spoon, and the spoon serving a quenelle of gelato on a yellow plate

Crafted from maple scrap wood sourced from sap-harvested trees, this gelato spoon is designed to be gently charred in front of guests, imparting a delicate burnt aroma and flavor. The warm material and quenelle shape enhance the gelato experience.
